Upper Klamath Basin Ag Collaborative Receives $6 Million Grant for Agricultural Resiliency and Restoration.
The Upper Klamath Basin Ag Collaborative has been awarded a $6 million federal grant to develop agricultural resiliency and restoration in the Upper Klamath Basin, focusing on the Sprague River, followed by the Klamath Marsh, Williamson, and Wood rivers. The collaborative is a voluntary, non-regulatory effort that aims to combine the benefits of large-scale restoration with modified agricultural practices.
Larry Nicholson, the Ag Collaborative's Executive Director and a ranch owner in Fort Klamath, emphasizes the importance of implementing a new way forward that raises the water table, slows down water flow, and retains moisture for slower release over time while benefiting from modified agricultural practices.
The Ag Collaborative will work with various stakeholders, including landowners, producers, tribes, governments, and other organizations, to foster sustainable practices, enhance community engagement, and facilitate partnerships that empower local ranchers and farmers to navigate environmental challenges and agricultural uncertainties.
The collaborative's goals include improving water quantity and quality, making ranches and farms more drought-resilient, lowering the potential of being in a critical groundwater area, increasing cold-water streams flowing into the Sprague, improving water quality and fisheries health, enhancing waterfowl habitat, reducing groundwater pumping costs, and increasing the value of ranches and farms.
Commissioner Derrick DeGroot expresses optimism about the Ag Collaborative's efforts to create a win-win situation for the Upper Basin, benefiting both the agricultural community and the Klamath Tribes. Jim Root, an Upper Klamath Basin rancher and founding board member, emphasizes that the collaborative's goals align with the Klamath Basin Integrated Fisheries Restoration & Monitoring Plan, demonstrating that large-scale river restoration can benefit both agricultural operations and the local environment.
