The Texas Methodist Foundation (TMF) has awarded $440,000 in grants to 42 churches, schools, and nonprofit organizations during its Fall 2023 grant cycle. These recipients are making a positive impact on their communities through innovative faith-based initiatives that focus on improving the personal and financial well-being of individuals and families.
The grant recipients are engaging in a variety of activities, including addressing mental health, growing food for food-insecure neighbors, training youth for job opportunities, and breaking the cycle of poverty for single mothers. By directly serving the needs of individuals, these organizations are strengthening the social fabric of their neighborhoods and nurturing a sense of possibility and belonging.
Wendy Abel, TMF's vice president of Grants Ministry, expressed pride in partnering with these organizations, stating that they understand the neighborhoods they serve and are learning how to build on the assets those neighborhoods already have, maximizing the impact of the grants.
Some notable grant recipients include:
1. Amarillo Wesley Community Center, Inc., which serves at-risk children, youth, adults, and seniors in the Northwest Texas Panhandle with childcare, educational programs, and mental health counseling.
2. Cafe Momentum in Dallas, Texas, which provides paid internships to justice-involved youth, equipping them with skills and access to living wage jobs and higher education.
3. Jeremiah Program in Austin, Texas, which focuses on single mothers of color facing barriers in post-secondary education, providing support for affordable housing and building generational wealth.
4. St. Philip's School and Community Center in Dallas, Texas, which provides quality food and resources to food-insecure neighbors through Aunt Bette's Community Pantry.
5. UpTogether in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, which improves the lives and opportunities of those living in poverty by investing in over 1,000 households.
TMF's grants are made possible by donors who have chosen the foundation to steward their charitable resources, often in the form of family endowments. Justin Gould, TMF's Chief Philanthropy Officer, expressed honor in partnering with these donors to support their philanthropic visions and steward a world of potential.
