NYC Small Business Services Offers Grants to Help Local Businesses Thrive
New York City's Small Business Services has announced significant new grants to support local businesses still recovering from the pandemic. The grants, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, aim to help business owners get back on their feet and make their shops more appealing to local customers.
The city is home to nearly 200,000 small shops, and the Small Business Services agency is committed to helping them grow. Commissioner Kevin D. Kim emphasizes that investing in neighborhoods is an investment in communities. The grants will fund improvements such as increased commercial lighting in shopping areas and even music in trees, like the one on 125th Street, to help merchants promote their businesses.
Small businesses play a vital role in the city, providing public safety through staff presence and sanitation services in busy commercial areas. Despite the pandemic forcing the closure of 30,000 shops, 1 in 6 businesses currently operating have started since January 2022, with immigrants owning half of the city's small businesses.
Barbara Askins, president and CEO of the 125th Street Business Improvement District, stresses the importance of ongoing communication with technology and creating an experience for customers. Councilman Oswald Feliz notes that vacated storefronts due to the pandemic have created quality-of-life issues.
City officials encourage residents to shop local, as 70 cents of every dollar spent at local businesses circulates back into the community. Youssoupha Gueye, a barista at 9 Tails Coffee Shop in Harlem, hopes people remember this when they buy their local coffee, as it helps cultivate a strong sense of community.
