Michigan City Launches Small Business Assistance Grant Program to Aid Pandemic Recovery.
Michigan City and the Economic Development Corp. Michigan City have introduced the Small Business Assistance Grant Program to support local businesses still struggling due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic. The program, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, offers grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 to qualified businesses.
Clarence Hulse, executive director of the Economic Development Corp., emphasized the lingering impact of the initial shutdown on many businesses, stating, "The pandemic is still an everyday challenge for those business owners who are feeling the effects to this day."
Grant funds can be used for various purposes, including infrastructure, equipment, employee payroll, utility or operating costs, rent or mortgage expenses, marketing and advertising, and physical improvements.
Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch highlighted the importance of the grant program, saying, "Our small businesses are the backbone of our community because they employ our local residents and create a sense of community within the city."
To be eligible, businesses must have a location within Michigan City municipal boundaries, have been in operation before March 1, 2020, employ 25 or fewer full-time employees, and demonstrate economic hardship. The city's ARPA Business Review Committee will evaluate applications based on how the funds will address needs, mitigate the impact of the pandemic, and contribute to business stability.
The Economic Development Corp. Michigan City, a nonprofit organization founded over 25 years ago, is hosting an informational meeting about the grant program on February 23, 2024, at City Hall. The organization works to attract new businesses to the community and strengthen existing ones through various services and programs.
