Mayville Couple Receives Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin Grant to Expand Honey-Based Business.
Danielle and Tim Clark, owners of Mayberry Farms in Mayville, Wisconsin, have been awarded a portion of the $473,000 Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin grants. The grant program, administered by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), aims to support the state's agriculture and food industries by helping farms and businesses efficiently process, market, and distribute locally grown food products.
Mayberry Farms began as a strawberry farm and gradually expanded to include beekeeping for pollination and honey production. The Clarks discovered the benefits of raw honey, which, unlike store-bought honey, is not pasteurized or filtered, making it a rich source of antioxidants and micronutrients. They also use honey and goat's milk from their farm to create all-natural soaps.
The Clarks plan to use the grant money to work with e-marketing experts to reach a wider audience and educate consumers about the importance of locally produced goods. They currently sell their products online, at their on-farm store, and through wholesale accounts with local businesses.
DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski emphasizes the importance of Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin grants in supporting local producers and processors while strengthening the connection between farms and consumers.
Four other businesses also received grants:
1. Grow It Forward, a Manitowoc non-profit, will use the funds to increase local food sales and direct sales of their products.
2. Fromage Spa, LLC (Lov-It Foods) in Green Bay will create a retail website to sell their newly-branded cheese products.
3. Dream Apple Farms, LLC in Mequon will use the grant to increase sales of local, organic, and sustainable food at their DreamPort Harvest Market in Port Washington.
4. Fitchburg's Orchard, Inc. will expand their offerings of value-added products using fresh fruit grown at Eplegaarden Orchard.
Since 2008, the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin program has funded 117 projects, totaling more than $2.977 million, generating over $14.4 million in new local food sales and creating or retaining more than 406 jobs.
