Hartford Minority-Owned Small Businesses Get Funding Boost Through Grants
In Hartford, Connecticut, a nonprofit organization called International Hartford is providing a much-needed capital injection to 15 minority-owned small businesses through its grant program designed to support immigrant entrepreneurs.
Art Feltman, the executive director of International Hartford, explained that the program aims to help small businesses with the potential for growth and prosperity but are held back by a lack of capital. This year, the organization distributed $80,000 in grants, a significant increase from the $50,000 awarded to 8 businesses in the previous year.
Feltman emphasized the importance of thriving small businesses in revitalizing city neighborhoods. "Hartford really needs these commercial corridors, in which many of them are located to thrive, and to not have vacancies, it increases public safety, and creates pedestrian traffic," he said.
One of the grant recipients this year is Vida Mensah, the owner of Queen's Fashion on Affleck Street. Mensah, who immigrated to Connecticut from Ghana in 2007, pursued her dream of bringing a piece of her home country to Hartford by opening her store in 2020 after losing her job during the pandemic.
With the grant money, Mensah was able to renovate the space next door, allowing her to expand her store and showcase her colorful outfits and hair products from Ghana. "The money that I got, thank God, it came at the time that I needed it," Mensah expressed.
Mensah encourages other small business owners to apply for funding opportunities and pursue their dreams, just as she did with the help of International Hartford's grant program.
The nonprofit is committed to uplifting even more immigrants and minorities in the Hartford area by securing additional funding for the grant program in the coming year.
