Detroit's Small Business Community Thrives with $1.1 Million in Motor City Match Grants
In the latest round of the Motor City Match program, 23 small businesses in Detroit received a total of $1.1 million in grants. This program, led by the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, supports entrepreneurs at various stages of their business development, from idea to opening.
Kevin Johnson, from the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, expressed his honor in celebrating these 23 new businesses, which exemplify the spirit of innovation and determination in the city.
One of the grant recipients, Annette Anderson, shared her inspiring story. Despite being a ninth-grade dropout and a teenage mom, she pursued her dreams of working in healthcare. She obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, eventually earned her GED, and became a nurse. Now, with a $20,000 grant from Motor City Match, Annette plans to open First Step Healthcare Training, where she aims to train and mentor individuals, changing their lives.
Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the program's goal of leveling the playing field for aspiring entrepreneurs who may not have access to family resources to start their businesses. The program also promotes diversity in the business landscape, as exemplified by Jonathan Peregrino, who received a $60,000 grant for JP Makes and Bakes. After studying pastry in the Philippines, Jonathan is excited to bring Filipino food and flavors, especially pastries, to Detroit.
With the recent application deadline for Round 26 of Motor City Match, the city of Detroit can expect another boost to its thriving small business community.
