Abadir's: Transforming a Historic Cottage into a Community Food Hub with Backing Small Businesses Grant
Sarah Cole, owner of Abadir's in Greensboro, Alabama, is using her Backing Small Businesses grant to renovate her restaurant and create a multi-use food hub for the community. As a 2023 grantee, Abadir's received an initial $5,000 grant and a $25,000 Enhancement Grant to support their mission of providing wholesome, seasonal baked goods and light fare influenced by Sarah's half-Egyptian, half-Southern roots.
With the initial grant, Sarah and her team made essential repairs and renovations to their historic cottage, including repairing exterior damage and making interior improvements. These updates not only improved the building's appearance but also allowed Abadir's to host their first pop-up event in the space, offering dine-in and take-out options to the local community.
The $25,000 Enhancement Grant enabled Abadir's to purchase a large walk-in cooler, expanding their capacity to share the space with other chefs, educators, and organizations. This addition will facilitate educational food-based programs, serve as a CSA drop-off/pick-up spot for regional farmers, and provide storage for grab-and-go options and small-batch restaurant service.
By collaborating with local nonprofits like the Black Belt Food Project and the Rural Studio Farm, Abadir's aims to offer free community lunches and small food distribution services. The walk-in cooler is vital to the growth and success of these community-focused initiatives.
The Backing Small Businesses grant program, a partnership between Main Street America and American Express, supports economically vulnerable and under-resourced small businesses with community reach. This year, eligible small business owners can apply for $10,000 grants for projects that grow or improve their businesses by building community, supporting their economic viability, or bolstering meaningful change. The application is open through Sunday, April 7, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. CT, or when the maximum of 5,000 applications is reached.
